Server to Cloud Migration
Migrating on-premises servers to Microsoft 365 offers significant advantages, including reduced infrastructure costs, enhanced collaboration, and improved security. It eliminates the need for physical hardware, lowering expenses and simplifying IT management, while providing scalable, subscription-based pricing.
Employees gain access to tools like Teams, SharePoint, and OneDrive, enabling real-time collaboration and remote work. Microsoft 365 ensures robust security with advanced threat protection, compliance tools, and regular updates. By modernizing IT infrastructure, companies can future-proof their operations and align with the remote workplace trends, making Microsoft 365 a cost-effective and strategic choice.
The Problem
This St. Louis Law Firm faced challenges with their existing IT infrastructure, including physical servers, security, and network management. Their system required frequent hardware replacements, reliance on third-party MFA solutions, and an inefficient way to handle user profiles, files, and data backup. Additionally, there was a need to enhance security controls, improve remote access, and optimize overall IT efficiency.
The Solution
The solution involved migrating key server functions to the cloud, transitioning user profiles to Azure Active Directory (Azure AD), and implementing a series of security improvements using Microsoft 365 Business Premium licenses. Key actions included:
- Migrating file serving, print functions, and network functions to cloud-based solutions like Teams, SharePoint, and Azure.
- Enhancing security with features like Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA), password-less login with Windows Hello for Business, and Zero Trust security with HTTPS connections.
- Consolidating IT services by using Microsoft Intune for device management and eliminating the need for a third-party MFA solution.
- Providing user training and onsite support during the transition to ensure smooth adaptation to the new systems.
The Result
The migration to the cloud significantly improved security by leveraging Azure AD, enhanced authentication with multiple MFA options, and removed the need for VPNs. Due to this law firm’s compliance requirements, we were able to drastically reduce the threat landscape to only allow compliant computers and mobile devices approved by the law firm to access company data. The use of Microsoft 365 Business Premium streamlined the IT infrastructure, consolidating IT spend by eliminating third-party services, reducing hardware replacement costs, and centralizing backups. Additionally, the organization benefited from better file collaboration through Teams and SharePoint, more efficient app management via Intune, and an overall more secure and efficient IT environment.
