Project Overview
Our construction client faced the challenge of replacing their aging Windows 2012 R2 server with a new Windows Server 2022. Additionally, they wanted to take the first steps towards cloud integration by migrating shared data to Teams and synchronizing local Active Directory (AD) accounts to Azure cloud. Security was a top priority, so we planned to implement Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) for all local, cloud, and VPN logins using DUO and Unifi ID.
Our Approach
Before the new server arrived, we began the setup by installing Microsoft Entra Connect on the existing server and adding DUO for Microsoft 365. We also initiated the file migrations to Microsoft Teams, ensuring a smooth transition.
The new server, equivalent in capacity but with significant technological improvements, was prepped and installed beside the current server. We started migrating roles and data in the background to minimize disruption. To enhance network security and performance, we swapped the existing USG 3 firewall with a newer UniFi Dream Router firewall, enabling faster network processing and MFA-capable VPN connectivity.
We meticulously prepared the VPN setup and scheduled the deployment for the new VPN. The server-side of the line of business applications (LOB apps – iRBS, Chief Architect, and QuickBooks) was migrated to the new server.
Final Switchover and Onsite Support
A dedicated day was scheduled for the final switchover of data and services, including the client-side of the LOB apps. The old server was decommissioned, and an onsite visit the following day ensured all users were running productively on the new server. We added the DUO client for computers and servers, enhancing security further.
Results and Client Feedback
The Project Team’s thorough review of all server functions during the discovery phase allowed us to plan appropriate migrations, eliminating dependency on the local server and starting the transition to the cloud on a solid, secure footing. The construction company now enjoys a modern, secure, and efficient IT infrastructure, ready to support their growth and innovation.
Our client rated our Project Team’s communication, timeliness, and efficiency as excellent, giving us a perfect score of 5. They noted that the objectives of the Discovery & Planning Phases were clearly defined and that the Project Team exceeded their expectations in delivering results and quality. They also praised Chris and the Project Team for their outstanding work, expressing their gratitude with a heartfelt “Thank you!”
